When I published my debut novel, BabyGirl, in 2019, I had no idea what I was doing. I'm an indie author, which means I had no one else to turn to. I had to learn everything on my own, and boy was there a lot to learn.

the business of self-publishing

In 2020 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, I was home with lots of time on my hands like most others.  Becoming and author was always a dream of mine. I decided early on that I would self-publish, but I never considered the task I was undertaking. Now that I had the time, I made it my business to learn everything I needed to know about self-publishing and marketing books. My first book BabyGirl was selling, but not nearly as much as it had the potential to and I wanted to change that.

each one, teach one

Once I amassed an abundance of knowledge about self-publishing books, I knew I couldn’t keep that information to myself. I instantly had a desire to share what I learned with other aspiring and self-published authors who had written great books but didn’t know how to market them.

It became my goal to give indie authors the ability to have their questions answered without going through the agonizing process of watching countless YouTube videos to get the information they needed. As a writer I know that writer’s want to spend their time creating, not conducting research.

My Story in a
nutshell

My first go at self-publishing was a disaster! There were typos everywhere, no marketing budget, and a bare-bones social media promotional campaign. I had a great cover which drew readers in, but it didn’t fit the genre I write in. I also received a lot of great reviews. But, the plethora of typos in my book garnered criticism that I didn’t need as a new author.

If I had a publishing consultant, I would have known about beta readers and arc readers (something I learned about later). I would have known about writing to market and the importance of selecting a good book cover.
